Our local road safety partner
We support road safety in Kazakhstan through our local partners Urban Forum Kazakhstan.
The Urban Forum Kazakhstan (UFK) foundation is an independent institution for sustainable urban development in Kazakhstan. It works as a dialogue platform for relevant stakeholders; as a research and advocacy think-tank; and as a capacity building centre for citizen-led initiatives in urbanism. UFK has been long engaged in studying and promoting the concept of child friendly cities. In 2018-2019, this work involved a project on creating a safer street environment for schoolchildren in Almaty’s underprivileged district. UFK experts teamed up with students of school #71 to study the quality of the street infrastructure and public spaces in their neighbourhood to assess its friendliness to children and adolescents as well as general safety for pedestrians, and diversity of functions. An extensive report with recommendations on the transformation of the area was sent to the district administration. UFK joined EASST as a partner in 2020. We are now supporting UFK to carry out similar work in Ust-Kamenogorsk (Oskemen), East Kazakhstan.
In addition to working with our local partners, in Kazakhstan we are working with Shell Kazakhstan and ENI to develop and implement a holistic road safety strategy based on the safe system approach in the West Kazakhstan Region.

There are on average 2340 road fatalities every year.
64% road fatalities are among car drivers (four wheel vehicles).
3.7% of GDP is lost due to road traffic collisions.

Mobility and road safety among people with disabilities in Oral – West Kazakhstan Region
This research looks at the relationship between disability, mobility, and road risk and makes recommendations on how to improve accessibility for people with disabilities in Oral – West Kazakhstan Region.
The study was conducted within the framework of the project “Safe roads in the West Kazakhstan Region”, supported by Shell Kazakhstan and Eni. It was implemented by local NGO “Gauhar Zhol” with the support of EASST.
