Road Safety in Uzbekistan
Our local road safety partner
We support road safety in Uzbekistan through our local partners the National Federation of Autosport and Karting of Uzbekistan (NAFKU), formerly the National Automobile Club of Uzbekistan (NACU). NAFKU is a member of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). Their mission is to reduce the risk of road traffic crashes and ensure the safety of vulnerable road users.
Running across Uzbekistan is the Silk Road, a key transit corridor for commercial vehicles travelling between Asia and Europe making work-related road risk a serious concern. As a land-locked country, it is also reliant on these roads as well as rail for most of its trade with neighbouring countries. In recent years, the Silk Road has also become popular with tourists, particularly cyclists. In Uzbekistan our aim is to work with these groups of road users to raise awareness of the risks and, using the Safe System approach, work with local stakeholders to ensure roads and routes across the country are safe for everyone. Uzbekistan is a member of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Program under which six priority road corridors are being upgraded.

lements of this UNECE Road Safety Performance Review were developed with the support of EASST and Georgian partners Partnership for Road Safety.
Road safety design guidance for road infrastructure designers in Central Asia
Developed by EASST, iRAP and the International Road Federation (IRF) with support from UN ESCAP and the UN Road Safety Fund, this new suite of road safety design guidance for road infrastructure designers across Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan includes:
- A full project report of our approach and methodology, including details of existing GOST-SNiP design standards in each country.
- Results of iRAP star rating assessments at standard cross sections in the region.
- Tailored road safety design guidance, based on international best practice, for each pilot country (Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan).
