ACM paint roadside reminders for pedestrians to take care

Moldova, Road Safety Governance and Capacity Building

EASST partner, the Automobile Club of Moldova (ACM) and the National Patrolling Inspectorate (NPI) have launched their new summer campaign, ‘Be careful at crossings!’. The action is aimed at preventing road traffic collisions at pedestrian crossings by reminding pedestrians to be aware and take care at pedestrian crossings in order to avoid tragedy.

In the first six months of 2018, a third of all road traffic collisions in Moldova involving pedestrians occurred at a pedestrian crossing. Five people have been killed and 142 others have been seriously injured as a result.

The campaign has involved painting warning messages on the pavement ahead of crossings across Moldova reminding pedestrians to Hold your child’s hand! and Look left, then right!

The Chief of the General Police Inspectorate, Mr. Alexandru Pinzari, painted the first messages along with ACM volunteers of the Universul Lyceum. At the launch of the campaign in Chisinau, Mr. Pinzari said that:

“In Moldova at least one crash involving a pedestrian is registered everyday. These high numbers require immediate action. Every citizen should be aware that they are responsible for the situation on roads. Change depends on each of us! My message to pedestrians is to be careful when crossing the street. To the community: teach children how to behave on roads. And to drivers: drive safely and respect road regulations.”
