Road Safety in Belarus

Road Safety in Belarus

Our local road safety partner

We support road safety in Belarus through our local partners, Belarusian Auto Moto Touring Club (BKA), a non-governmental organisation founded in 1998. As a member of the Federation Internationale de L’Automobile (FIA), the BKA provide roadside assistance as well as promoting road safety and protecting the interests of drivers across Belarus.

In particular, the BKA is concerned with the devastating fact that every four days a child dies on the roads in Belarus. As such, they have developed a road safety strategy targeted primarily at young drivers and children. Working in partnership with EASST, the BKA has implemented a number of successful projects in this area, cooperating closely with the Road Traffic Police, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Ministry of Sport and Tourism, and other governmental and non- governmental organisations.
Another area of focus for the BKA is the link between road risk, disability and inclusive mobility. In 2017, the BKA, supported by EASST, conducted ground-breaking research into the road safety problems faced by disabled people in the country. They found that due to poor levels of accessible infrastructure and a lack of consideration on the roads by drivers and others, two-thirds of disabled people face difficulties in making basic journeys. Their ongoing advocacy over the issue has succeeded in raising wider awareness of the issues faced by people with disabilities in terms road safety, and, for the first time, road safety teaching resources based on an adapted version of the EASST Road Safety Education Pack are available for use in Belarus for children with special educational needs and disability.
