Road Safety in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Our local road safety partner

We support road safety in Bosnia and Herzegovina through our local road safety partner, the Bosnia and Herzegovina Automobile Club (BIHAMK), a non-governmental organisation and FIA Mobility Club which plays an important role in promoting road safety and reducing traffic crashes and their tragic consequences. To reduce the country’s high fatality rate, BIHAMK has been actively supporting the road safety goals of the UN Decade of Action 2010-2020 and 2020-2030. Their work has involved numerous projects to raise awareness about key road safety issues, including seatbelt and child car seat usage, safety of pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, distracted driving and post-crash response.

Over the past three decades, BIHAMK’s road safety experts have prioritised traffic awareness for young drivers and children of all ages. They have been tirelessly conducting workshops, contests, and training programmes using driving simulators with the main goal of training future generations of responsible and safe drivers. Participants in their competitions have gone on to participate in international events hosted by the FIA, such as the Region I European Best Driver Contest. Most recently, they have extended their awareness activities to police cadets through the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs to equip future police officers with the requisite knowledge to enforce road safety and make streets safer.

BIHAMK also advocates for legislative initiatives to improve road safety by collaborating with relevant national institutions. In 2025, they launched their “Drive Change for Cleaner Air” project in partnership with the FIA’s Safe and Sustainable Mobility Programme which aims to improve the general health of the population of the Sarajevo Canton as well as traffic conditions by undertaking a study of the impact of traffic on the environment and developing proposals targeting air quality. In previous years, they have organised a public petition to introduce speed limits of 30 km/h in city centre areas, adopted the Action Plan for Road Safety Improvements in Bosnia and Herzegovina and initiated a high-level Roundtable on the necessity of introducing adequate legislation for e-scooters.

Another aspect of BIHAMK’s road safety engagement is its commitment to collecting important road transport-related statistical data and conducting annual studies on road safety in Bosnia and Herzegovina. These statistics serve as a valuable and reliable source of information, and are accessible via BIHAMK’s website for experts, media, and the general public. Through awareness raising, advocacy, and data analysis, BIHAMK remains committed to creating a safer and more responsible road environment in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
