Road Safety in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Our local road safety partner

We support road safety in Bosnia and Herzegovina through our local road safety partner, the Bosnia and Herzegovina Automobile Club (BIHAMK), a non-governmental organisation in that plays important role in promoting road safety and reducing traffic crashes and their tragic consequences. As road safety remains a critical challenge for the country (Bosnia and Herzegovina has one of the worst fatality rates in Europe, with over 50% more fatalities compared to the EU average), BIHAMK has been actively supporting accomplishing UN road safety goals during the decades of 2010-2020 and 2020-2030 by implementing numerous projects to raise awareness about key road safety issues, including seatbelt and baby seat usage, safety of pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, distracted driving and post-crash response.

Over the past three decades, BIHAMK’s road safety experts have prioritized traffic education for young drivers and children of all ages. They have been tirelessly conducting workshops, contests, and training programs using driving simulators, with the main goal of educating future generations of responsible and safe drivers. BIHAMK also advocates for legislative initiatives to improve road safety by collaborating with relevant institutions. Recent examples include organizing a public petition to introduce speed limits of 30 km/h in city centre areas, conducting a RADAR-related Pilot Action on Safer Roads Investment Plans and adopting Action Plan for Road Safety Improvements in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and initiating a high-level Roundtable on the necessity of introducing adequate legislation for e-scooters. Furthermore, BIHAMK organized “Let’s Drive Green” event, the first major conference in Bosnia and Herzegovina focused on promoting sustainable mobility.

Another aspect of BIHAMK’s road safety engagement is collecting important road transport-related statistical data and conducting annual studies on road safety statistics in Bosnia and Herzegovina. These statistics serve as a valuable and reliable source of information, and are accessible via BIHAMK’s website https://bihamk.ba/statistika/statistike for experts, media, and general public. Through integration of education, advocacy, and data analysis, BIHAMK remains committed to creating a safer and more responsible road environment in the country.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a member of the Western Balkans Regional Road Safety Observatory.
