Following on from the success of its 2013 Global Road Safety Week activities, EASST’s Kyrgyz partner Road Safety NGO continued with its promotion of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-20.
Chinara Kasmambetova, Director of Road Safety NGO, attended a discussion on 5th June 2013 organised by the Asian Development Bank. The focus of the meeting was the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, attended by representatives of relevant ministries and agencies as well as Road Safety NGO. Following a presentation from Dr. Alan Ross on global road safety, the meeting participants discussed the Kyrgyz Republic’s readiness and progress in reaching the UN Decade of Action target of saving 5 million lives by 2020.

By invitation of the Ministry of Transport and Communication of Kyrgyz Republic, Ms Kasmambetova also contributed to a meeting regarding the Bishkek-Osh road rehabilitation project financed by the Asian Development Bank. The meeting was attended by Road Safety NGO and other relevant stakeholders who discussed the development of the road rehabilitation project.
Road Safety NGO is the only non-governmental organization working on road safety issues in the Kyrgyz Republic where the scale of death and injury on the roads cost the economy around $250 million, or 4.3% of GDP (2011, Asian Development Bank).
