EASST welcomes launch of UN Decade of Sustainable Transport 2026-2035
The UN Decade of Sustainable Transport, officially launched on 10 December 2025, represents a critical global commitment to transforming transportation systems over the next ten years. While there is no single dedicated Sustainable Development Goal for transport, it is recognised as an essential enabler for achieving many of the SDGs, including those related to health, sustainable cities, climate action, and economic growth.
The Decade provides a unique opportunity to raise awareness of transport’s crucial role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and to mobilise new solutions, resources, and partnerships to advance sustainable transport globally. The Implementation Plan, developed by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs in collaboration with Regional Commissions and stakeholders, establishes a strategic framework to coordinate actions, mobilise resources, and monitor progress towards sustainable transport worldwide.
EASST is committed to supporting the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport and working closely with partners to help meet its targets.
Our work directly aligns with the Decade’s objectives through our several of our priority programme areas:
- Children’s Road Safety – protecting the most vulnerable road users
- Safe and Inclusive Mobility– ensuring accessible transport for people with disabilities and promoting gender equity
- Active Travel and Healthy Streets – encouraging walking and cycling as sustainable transport modes
- Road Safety Governance and Capacity Building– strengthening institutional frameworks
EASST has consistently demonstrated that civil society plays a vital role in advancing sustainable transport. Our partnerships with governments, international organisations, and local communities have delivered tangible improvements in road safety infrastructure, policy development, and public awareness.
The UN Decade of Sustainable Transport emphasises the importance of collaboration among member states, UN agencies, civil society organisations, and all relevant stakeholders.
